Fujifilm has announced the X-E4, a mirrorless 26.1-megapixel compact camera that the company is referring to as a “rangefinder-style” design. The new camera is highlighted by fast autofocus and the promise of high image quality despite the small and lightweight body. The Fujifilm X-E4 is the X-series’s lightest and smallest camera body, weighing just 0.80 pounds and measuring 4.77 inches x 2.87 inches x 1.28 inches. It features the company’s fourth-generation sensor and processor and a tilting rear LCD screen that was designed to specifically not protrude too far from the body so as to keep the design as compact and portable as possible. Fujifilm says the design is heavily influenced by classic film cameras, hence the “rangefinder-style” the company uses as a description. Both the front and rear grips are flat to give it a classic aesthetic, while the top plate of the camera body is molded from magnesium “to provide a polished, elevated finish.” The design of the camera has been clearly optimized for simplicity and ease of use. Controls have also been concentrated on front-side dials and the company makes sure to mention clearly that the topmost command dial has a Program Mode (as opposed to other Fujifilm models that had a difficult to understand switch to enter Program Mode). As far as image-capture capability is concerned, the Fujifilm X-E4 features a 26.1MP X-Trans CMOS sensor and the high-speed image processing engine X-Processor 4 to provide fast autofocus. The X-E4 uses phase-detection autofocus points across almost 100% of the sensor to acquire focus in as fast as 0.02 seconds. It is also able to track moving subjects with an advanced AF-tracking algorithm, ensuring that images can be captured when the focus is optimal. Speaking of autofocus, the X-E4 is equipped with Fujifilm’s latest face and eye detection technology in low light as dim as -7.0EV (when using the Fujinon XF50mmF1.0 R WR lens). A total of 18 film simulations are available with the X-E4 as well. As far as video performance is concerned, the X-E4 shoots oversampled 6K footage to record 4Kp30 4:2:0 8-bit video internally or higher quality 4:2:2 10-bit via HDMI out. It can also capture Full HD video up to 240 frames per second. The X-E4 is expected to be available in March for $849.95 as a body only (in either black or silver) or available as a kit that includes a 27mm f/4 R WR lens for $1,049.95.
